Glory days: Bob Holland in action for Australia during the third Test against England at Trent Bridge in 1985. Photo: Adrian MurrellFormer Australian Test leg-spinner Robert Holland and his wife Carolyn are recovering at home after they were allegedly assaulted on a Lake Macquarie cricket ground on Saturday.

The 69-year-old Holland, who volunteers as a curator for Toronto Workers District Cricket Club, stopped at Awaba Oval on Saturday afternoon when he spotted a male and female riding dirt bikes on the ground. Mr Holland asked the pair to leave before police allege the 31-year-old man and 21-year-old woman became aggressive.

Mrs Holland, 68, began filming the altercation from the other side of the field before the male dirt bike rider allegedly attacked her and knocked her to the ground with the vehicle. Mr Holland then came to the aid of his wife and was allegedly punched in the mouth.

While on the ground it is alleged Mr Holland, whose arm was in a sling, was kicked in his shoulder and ribs. Three weeks ago Mr Holland underwent surgery to repair torn tendons in his shoulder.

Police allege the younger woman also assaulted Mrs Holland before the riders left with both Mr and Mrs Holland’s phones, which were later found destroyed.

The Hollands were taken to the John Hunter Hospital and received treatment for cuts and bruising.

On Sunday Lake Macquarie police arrested a 21-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man at a Heaton Street address.

They were taken to Belmont police station and charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and inflicting actual bodily harm as well as one count of common assault.

Both received conditional bail. They will face Belmont Local Court on September 13.

Mr and Mrs Holland’s son Craig said his father was released from hospital on Sunday morning and his mother returned home on Sunday afternoon.

“He’s upbeat, like he always is,” Craig Holland said. “He doesn’t have a bad word to say about anyone, but he doesn’t understand how humans can be like that.”

Craig said his father could lose several teeth due to the alleged assault, but his mother sustained the worst injuries with bruising to her face and she was struggling to walk.

“Mum’s been looking after him because he’s been restricted with what he can do, and now she’s worse than Dad because Mum got the boot laid in too and she’s a bit more fragile,” he said. “It’s bit of a family crisis because they’re not able to do much for themselves at the moment.”

Mr Holland played 11 Tests for Australia between 1984 and 1986, after becoming the oldest debutante in half a century at 38. He is most famous for spinning the Aussies to victory over a powerful West Indies side in the fifth Test at the SCG in 1984-85. He claimed match figures of 10-144, which included the wickets of legendary batsmen Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenridge and Desmond Haynes.

Following his retirement from first-class cricket, Mr Holland has been heavily involved in supporting Newcastle cricket as a coach and committee member at Toronto.

Beyonce has pulled a Taylor Swift and invited a huge entourage along to the MTV Video Music Awards.

The Lemonade star, dressed in more than $12.5 million of Lorraine Schwartz diamonds, was joined on the red carpet by women who appear in her visual album that is nominated for 11 awards.

Model Winnie Harlow, actor Quvenzhane Wallis and Blue Ivy in tutu and sneakers were among Beyonce’s 12 guests but it was Wanda Johnson, mother of Oscar Grant, Gwen Carr; mother of Eric Garner; Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin and Lesley McSpadden-Head, mother of Michael Brown, Jr. who made the biggest impact on the white carpet.

All four women appeared on Beyonce’s latest album holding photographs of their sons, killed after being shot by police in racially-charged incidents, establishing the #BlackLivesMatter movement – a core trope of Lemonade. The group arrival at the VMAs, one of the most popular music awards shows thanks to its flamboyant performers and elaborate fashion, was reminiscent of Swift’s “squad” appearance in 2015.

Last year the Shake It Off singer was flanked on the red carpet by nine cast members from her Bad Blood music video.

The likes of model Gigi Hadid, actor Cara Delevingne and Law & Order SVU’s Mariska Hargitay then joined Swift on stage to accept the Moon Man award for Best Video.

Swift is not expected to attend the event that is being held in New York.

Kanye West has been granted four minutes of uninterrupted air time by MTV – last year he kicked off his candidacy for the 2020 US presidential election – and Britney Spears is set to perform for the first time since that awkward appearance in 2007 that had the crowd, and the world, cringing as she stumbled around the stage miming Gimme More.

The Daily Advertiser continues its series of questions and answerswith council candidates.

Australia First lead candidate Lorraine Sharp

Australia First lead candidate Lorraine Sharp is a self-styled people’s champion who promises to represent real battlers, like her public housing neighbours.

Are you a racist?

I am not a racist, I support the preservation of Australian identity, which is nothing to do with a doctrine ofof race superiority or hatred.

My dreamis anAustralian society solely consisting of Aboriginals and people of European descent.

I’m not saying anyone that’s non-Aborignal or non-European is on a bus tomorrow but we need a moratorium on refugees before we end up with ethnic ghettos.

Are you fit to hold public office given you were convicted of intimidation just a few days ago?

I’m not guilty, nothing happened, it was a frame-up.

If Tanya Plibersek’s (deputy Labor leader) drug courier husband can hold a high-felluting job in government, why should I be banned? I never hurt anyone.

What are the biggest issues Wagga faces?

Major icedealers are coming from interstate because they’ve heard Wagga has a huge addict market.

Drugs and crime arenot directly council legislative areas, but if councillors can see families being ripped apart by drugs, they have a duty to act.

Council needs to be more involved in communities doing it so tough with the cost of living they can’t afford basics like sport for their kids.

What do you think of the current councillors?

There’s acorporate group of developers who don’t want to let go of their power and are stymieing the few with good intentions.

There’s notransparency or accountability;potholes are out of control, they’re off on overseas jaunts, wastingmoney on endless reports and junk art.

We haven’t seen or heard from your running mates from Australia First. Are they legitimate candidates?

Of course they are, everything’s been authorised and registered by the AEC.

Any one of them would make fine councillors, but there’sa security issue, Australia First is targeted by the political underworld.
